TESTED | CARDO FREECOM 4X | Shed Time | Tested

Want to stay in touch while driving with your mates in the same vehicle or even a different vehicle? Check out our review on the Cardo Freecom 4X

We traditionally only pull out our Cardo Freecom 4X when we’re going on big trailrides but lately we’ve been using them for everything, even mustering. They’re great for listening to music or directions and receiving phone calls during the monotony of transport legs to get to where we want to go. But most people would not think a headset could be used for keeping the group together. There’s too much going on to think about talking to someone and there’s a risk of not focusing.

Well we have only used the Cardo Freecom 4X for trailriding and absolutely love them. We use them as lead and sweep drivers on big rides out with big groups. They’re great for keeping both ends of the group up to date with what’s happening in the middle.

We Liked

Ease of use – To connect we simply started speaking and so long as we were within the 1.2km range they connected easily. No need to press any buttons or say “Hey Cardo”.

Feel – The wheel at the bottom for adjusting the volume was easy to feel and roll, which came in handy because we could turn them down easily when people were having conversations within the car.

Durable – We’ve ridden in torrential rain and had the units bash into the side of the Polars RZR Pro R and they’re still in top shape and work fine.

Clarity – The audio quality was clear and easy to hear.

We didn’t like

Connection – The bracket to hold the unit to my helmet didn’t conform to my helmet shape very well and twice dropped off. I run a Bell Moto 9s.

Stick – The microphone sticky pads didn’t like sticking to the inside of my helmet and I needed to use some tape in the end.

Verdict

If you regularly lead or sweep rides in your group, grab a set of these. They may not have the range of a UHF but they’re much easier to use and as the sweep, the ability to stay connected to the lead rider made working as a big group even easier. They’re durable and the Bluetooth connectivity was easy to use. The range might be 1.2km without any interference but we found in the bush, when you got 300 metres away with trees in between you and the other bike, the connection struggled.
