The Yamaha Viking side-by-side vehicle is for work carrying up to three occupants. Here's all you need to know and the Japanese machine.

The Yamaha Viking is equipped with the Ultramatic On Command drive system which features 2WD, 4WD, and 4WD Diff Lock settings, along with downhill engine braking. This system ensures enhanced traction across varying terrains.

Key specifications on the Yamaha Viking include automotive-style two-stage door latches and a parking brake warning buzzer. Efforts to improve comfort during operation have led to the inclusion of noise and vibration reduction features such as rubber damper plates, a rigid chassis, sound dampening materials, and an engine-mounted torque rod. These features work together to provide a smoother and quieter ride at all engine speeds. Additionally, the vehicle’s rear steel cargo bed has been reinforced and now features mounting points on the bed rails. A rubber cargo bed mat is also included to further diminish sound and vibration during transit.

In terms of specifications, the Viking is powered by a liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, SOHC, 4-valve single-cylinder engine with a displacement of 686.0 cc. The engine’s bore and stroke measurements are 102.0 mm x 84.0 mm, and it operates with a compression ratio of 10.0:1. The lubrication system is a wet sump type, and the fuel system features fuel injection for improved efficiency. The ignition system uses TCI, and the vehicle starts with an electric starter system. The fuel tank capacity is 36.7 litres, supporting extended use without frequent refuelling.

The final transmission is via a shaft, and the Yamaha Viking uses an Ultramatic V-belt transmission system with all-wheel engine braking, featuring settings for high, low, neutral, reverse, and park. The frame of the vehicle is constructed from steel tubing, ensuring durability.

Both the front and rear suspensions are independent double wishbone with 205mm of travel, designed to handle rough terrain comfortably. The braking system consists of hydraulic dual discs on both the front and rear, providing reliable stopping power. The front tires are sized 25 × 8-12NHS, and the rear tires are 25 × 10-12NHS.

The vehicle’s dimensions are 3100 mm in length, 1570 mm in width, and 1925 mm in height, with a seat height of 793 mm. It boasts a wheelbase of 2135 mm and a generous ground clearance of 300 mm, enabling it to navigate challenging landscapes easily. The wet weight of the Viking is 649 kg, indicating a solid build that can withstand heavy-duty applications.
